How CBD can help initiate an effective immune response
CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of many compounds found in the hemp (Sativa-L) plant. What is often overlooked is the fact that the Sativa-L plant doesn’t hold the power of exclusively acting as a psychoactive substance - altering sensory perception and judgement-making processes. Our products comprise of cannabinoids obtained from this plant with the exception of THC – the sole chemical that is responsible for inducing that ‘high feeling’.
With CBD, inflammation response to antigen infection can be regulated so your body’s immune system does not overrespond to the threat and can fight it proficiently. Excessive inflammation causes collateral damage to cells & fibres bordering the focal point of contamination/ injury. A hyperactive immune system is also detrimental to health as it allows opportunistic foreign bodies to infiltrate and further deteriorate your condition. In general – CBD, by interacting with the endocannabinoid system in the body, can conduct homeostatic regulation; this means that it can help maintain a constant & healthy environment in your body by exerting a modifying influence on your physiological systems.
CBD has the potential to produce a shift from Th1 to Th2 immune response. This is expressed as a drop in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines: TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12, IL-6 (the suppression of these cytokines is attenuated by TRPV1 [Vanilloid receptor]), and an increase in production of cytokines associated with lymphopenia (immunosuppression) like IL-4 or IL-10. In a study conducted by Abo-Elnazar et al, CD4+ T cells from study group administered with CBD showed an approximately 50 percent decrease in proinflammatory IL-17 (129.05 pg/ml ± 44.24 pg/ml versus 206.30 pg/ml ± 51.05 pg/ml, p <0.001) and a two-fold increase in anti-inflammatory IL-10.
Another way immunity has the potential to be improved with CBD is highlighted by a study conducted by Jankowski et al, it was discovered that administration of CBD enhances the nonspecific antiviral and antitumor immune response by generating a greater concentration of NK [Natural Killer] and NKT cells (type of white blood cells which combat infections). Alongside this, CBD inhibits the activity of T cells, B cells and T cytotoxic lymphocyte subsets – hence modulating hyperactive immune responses to help fight antigenic media with greater efficacy. Furthermore, NKT cells have been postulated to be integral in cancer patient prognosis.
In conclusion, a strong immune response is critical to combating pathogenic matter however, these immune effects need to be moderated so they don’t make the body susceptible to further damage/ frenzied T-cell mechanisms which don’t act in a productive manner.
